Weather Statement The conversational currency that connects and creates an instant comfort in dialogue is the very same thing that has heated up to such socio-political debate present in the media and in scientific circles that our society has come to fear the weather in similar respect to the recurring anxiety over nuclear war. One also reflects on the mass paranoia present during the cold war, yet with the weather there's a shift from man as the creator/destroyer with primal instincts in defense to control chaos and know the enigmatic. Evidence of human success in controlling weather can be seen through cloud seeding, HAARP; a kind of geo-physical warfare, AWM (artificial weather modification), NASA, and most recently in the Beijing Olympics. By now most would agree that humans have had an impact on the warming of the planet, and that the worst natural disasters have yet to be seen as we watch the wrath of the current hurricanes and the satellite storms creating tornadoes and mass flooding through the Midwest, still, we smile when it's sunny and 78. Having recently lived on a farm in rural Kansas, my personal connection to the weather both extreme and gentle is impassioned. This past spring, the town I lived in was destroyed by a tornado at the very same time I was painting one. As a painter I've discovered a correlation between my process of art-making and the meteorological attempt of predicting the weather. Much as an atmospheric scientist would use charts, graphs and symbols to identify and forecast patterns based on past trends, fluctuations and chaos in the weather, I am systematically attempting to control paint while simultaneously embracing chance and disorder through the process of gravity paint pours/pools, heat, and expressionistic action painting with my hands; pulling from both my earlier modes of painting and objectively contextualizing the work within the framework of the history of painting. -Jenna North. Energy fields of pattern formed by frequency waves in nature is the essence of my current body of work; The Grey-tones. For the last eight years my visual exploration as an abstract painter has been the rich history of ornamental design in many cultures and epochs and the spiritual experience of making and being engrossed in opulent symmetry. The aesthetics of harmonious design and exigent vibrations stimulates physiological and formal seduction of the viewer. The Grey-tones are inspired by the notion that sound vibrations in nature create pattern formations that are reminiscent of specific elements of design. I conduct virtual labs using sound/substance algorithms. The results inform the Grey-tone paintings. Recently color is given some allowance after maintaining a strict constraint of black and white for nearly two years. Red corresponds to the music note C, planet mars, the 1st chakra, the element fire and my checkbook. A recent study revealed that stars hum middle C before death. Perhaps the presence of red in this work is a sign of its transformative state. | Jenna North EducationSan Francisco Art Institute. MFA (current student). Painting.
